Sinbad and Scheherezade

Once Upon a Time Casting Sinbad, Scheherezade for Season 6

TVLine has sneaked a peek inside Once Upon a Time‘s book of Untold Stories and recognizes at least two familiar names due to make their debut during Season 6.

As revealed in last month’s finale, Mr. Hyde (played by Sam Witwer) — as part of his backroom deal with Rumplestiltskin — has transported to Storybrooke a throng of denizens from the Land of Untold Stories.
Among the new arrivals will be Sinbad, and to that end the ABC drama is seeking a 30something Middle Eastern/Arabic or Northern African male to play a roguishly charming and quick-witted hero who knows the power of kindness but as of late has lost faith in his ability to lead his people. Paging Covert Affairs/Nurse Jackie alum Haaz Sleiman…?

Also being cast to debut in early Season 6 is Scheherazade, the famous spinner of the tale of One Thousand and One Nights. Here, the character is envisioned as a regal Middle Eastern/Arabic beauty who never backs down from a good fight and can go toe-to-toe with even the toughest adversaries. This is Alphas spitfire Azita Ghanizada’s role to lose, amiright?

Morpheus

Question: I am really excited for the next season of Once Upon a Time, and my question is: What new characters will we meet besides Hyde? — Iris
Ausiello: In addition to the previously scooped Sinbad and Scheherazade, the ABC series is casting for the premiere the role of Morpheus, as in the Greek god of dreams (versus, you know, Laurence Fishburne in The Matrix). He is described as “an old soul in a young body,” someone who is equally good at reading people as he is at hiding his own agenda.

ARCHIE

Once Upon a Time's Archie Hopper to Return — But Who Is His Patient?

After being MIA for nearly two full seasons, Storybrooke’s resident shrink is taking appointments again.

TVLine has learned exclusively that Once Upon a Time original cast member Raphael Sbarge is set to reprise his role as Jiminy Cricket’s human alter ego, Dr. Archie Hopper, in the ABC drama’s Season 6 premiere — “and our favorite cricket-shrink is going to find himself with a new patient,” says series co-creator Adam Horowitz.
Archie was last seen in the early Season 4 episode “Rocky Road,” as the Frozen storyline was getting underway. Since going on recurring status with Once, Sbarge has played SFPD homicide inspector David Molk on TNT’s Murder in the First and guested on such series as Hawaii Five-0, iZombie, NCIS: Los Angeles and Better Call Saul.

Once Upon a Time returns on Sunday, Sept. 25, with its first season in a while to move away from the 11-episode storyline arcs.

♦ My trusty gut is telling me Once Upon a Time might actually/finally be adding Aladdin and Jasmine in Season 6, versus Sinbad and Scheherezade, as we previously speculated.

Once Upon a Time has tapped 24 alum Giles Matthey to play Morpheus in season 6, EW has learned exclusively.

Despite the introduction of the Land of Untold Stories opening up the storytelling possibilities to just about everyone, we’re not talking about Lawrence Fishburne’s character in The Matrix. Matthey’s character is the quick-witted and insightful god of dreams from Greek mythology. He’s equally good at reading people as he is at hiding his own agenda. He will be doing what Morpheus does best — guiding people through the world of dreams.

Lest we forget, Belle (Emilie de Ravin) is currently under a sleeping curse, and we hear Morpheus will, in fact, be interacting with her, as well as Rumple (Robert Carlyle).

Matthey, whose credits also include True Blood, The Good Wife, and NCIS, will appear in at least the season 6 premiere.

Cinderella/Ashley

Jessy Schram is set for a Once Upon a Time encore, to reveal one Cinderella connection and shed some light on another.

TVLine has learned exclusively that Schram will return in the upcoming Season 6’s third episode, in which it is revealed that the maid-turned-princess has a connection to the Land of Untold Stories, which in the Season 5 finale relocated its many denizens to Storybrooke.
The same episode will also explore the origin of the friendship between Cinderella and Snow White (played by Ginnifer Goodwin), which was first established in Season 1, Episode 4 flashbacks.

Schram last appeared on Once Upon a Time (as Cinderella’s Storybrooke alter ego, Ashley) in the seventh episode of Season 4. The ubiquitous actress’ other TV credits include Nashville, The Lizzie Borden Chronicles, Mad Men, Falling Skies and Last Resort.
Cinderella/Ashley isn’t the only early-seasons callback on tap for Season 6; as previously reported, Raphael Sbarge is due to appear in the Sunday, Sept. 25 opener as Archie Hopper.

the Count of Monte Cristo

Legend of the Seeker star Craig Horner has landed a guest-starring role on Once Upon a Time — and EW can exclusively reveal that he will be playing the Count of Monte Cristo.

Horner will appear in at least one episode in season 6, though details on what he’ll be doing are being kept under wraps. The Count’s introduction comes in the wake of the show introducing the Land of Untold Stories, which opens up the storytelling possibilities to pretty much everyone.

The Count of Monte Cristo is an Alexandre Dumas novel that tells the story of an innocent man wrongly imprisoned, who returns years later to take his revenge on those who betrayed him. (ABC’s Revenge was inspired by the book.)

Aladdin and a new recast jafar

ABC’s Once Upon a Time, at long last, is taking on the story of Aladdin, as revealed during a Season 6 teaser that debuted at the San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday.

At the close of Once‘s panel, Deniz-Akdeniz cocreators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis gave the audience one more treat — in the form of the first three minutes from the Sunday, Sept. 25 season premiere. At the close of the clip, viewers met Aladdin, who is being played by Deniz Akdeniz (South Beach, right).
Poised to get in the street rat, riff-raff’s face, meanwhile, is Covert Affairs favorite Oded Fehr, as the evil Jafar. (Lost alum Naveen Andrews played the Royal Vizier of Agrabah on the short-lived Once Upon a Time in Wonderland spinoff, but was unavailable to reprise the role, due to his Sense8 commitments.)

The reveal of Aladdin and Jafar comes on the heels of a flurry of other Season 6 castings, including Giles Matthey (24: Live Another Day) as Morpheus, Craig Horner (Hindsight) as the Count of Monte Cristo and the returns of Cinderella/Ashley (played by Jessy Schram) and Dr. Archie Hopper (Raphael Sbarge).

Princess Jasmine

Galavant‘s Princess Isabella is now Once Upon a Time‘s Princess Jasmine.

Hours after the ABC series revealed at its San Diego Comic-Con panel that it’s introducing the characters of Aladdin and Jafar (to be played by Deniz Akdeniz and Covert Affairs favorite Oded Fehr), TVLine has learned that Galavant star Karen David has been cast as Jasmine.
Akdeniz and Fehr make their debut in the Season 6 opener (airing Sunday, Sept. 25), while TVLine hears that David will first be seen in Episode 4.

David’s previous TV credits also include the BBC One drama Waterloo Road, episodes of Strike Back and Castle, and the CBBC children’s sitcom Pixelface.

The reveal of Jasmine, Aladdin and Jafar comes on the heels of a flurry of other Season 6 castings, including Giles Matthey (24: Live Another Day) as Morpheus, Craig Horner (Hindsight) as the Count of Monte Cristo and the returns of Cinderella/Ashley (played by Jessy Schram) and Dr. Archie Hopper (Raphael Sbarge).

Dr. Whale

David Anders will return to Storybrooke for one episode in the upcoming sixth season of Once Upon a Time, EW has learned exclusively.

The iZombie star will reprise his role as Dr. Whale, a.k.a Victor Frankenstein, who last appeared in a season 5 episode, where he helped deliver Zelena’s (Rebecca Mader) baby.

“If you’re going to have Jekyll [Hank Harris] and Hyde [Sam Witwer], there has to be a mad scientist convention,” executive producer Edward Kitsis says. Adds EP Adam Horowitz: “Let’s just say mad scientists stick together.”

Anders joins other returning familiar faces, including Jessy Schram as Cinderella and Raphael Sbarge as Dr. Hopper, along with new characters Jafar (Oded Fehr), Aladdin (Deniz Akdeniz), Princess Jasmine (Karen David), Morpheus (Giles Matthey), and the Count of Monte Cristo (Craig Horner).

The doctor is (back) in.
Jonny Coyne is set to guest-star on ABC’s Once Upon a Time, reprising his role as Once Upon a Time in Wonderland‘s Dr. Lydgate, TVLine has confirmed. The news comes on the heels of David Anders’ announced encore as Dr. Whale/Dr. Frankenstein. Fold in Dr. Jekyll, and you have the trappings for a very unorthodox AMA conference.

Coyne first played Wonderland-bound Alice’s asylum overlord in the Once spinoff’s series premiere. His previous TV credits also include Gotham, Salem, Manhattan and 11.22.63. He will appear in the fourth episode of Once Season 6 (premiering Sunday, Sept. 25, at 8/7c).

Capt Nemo

Image

Once Upon a Time has cast Faran Tahir as the famed Captain Nemo from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, EW has learned exclusively.

The Dallas and Warehouse 13 alum will play the hardened leader of the Nautilus submarine, who’s a zealous believer in a cause that takes him from 20,000 leagues under the sea to the destiny that he won’t let anyone prevent him from achieving.

“We’re thrilled to give a Once Upon a Time spin to the classic character of Captain Nemo from one of our favorite Disney films, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis say. “We’re excited to see his mythology merge with Storybrooke’s own captain — Hook [Colin O’Donohue]. If for no other reason than to see the Jolly Roger go up against a submarine.”

The news comes in the wake of the EPs teasing at Comic-Con that season 6 would uncover some surprising secrets from Hook’s past. Captain Nemo also enters the scene just as OUAT is introducing the Land of Untold Stories, opening up the world of the show beyond the fairy tale characters we’ve come to know and love.

Tahir joins the growing list of newbies in season 6, including Oded Fehr as Jafar, Deniz Akdeniz as Aladdin, Karen David as Princess Jasmine, Giles Matthey as Morpheus, and Craig Horner as the Count of Monte Cristo.

Ruth and The Dragon

Once Upon a Time Season 6 is ready to shed some more light on a Storybrooke hero’s past.
TVLine has learned exclusively that Gabrielle Rose is set to reprise her role as Charming’s mother, Ruth, who last appeared in one of Season 4’s Frozen flashbacks. As Josh Dallas told us at Comic-Con, with the introduction of the purely Evil Queen, who possesses all of Regina’s past memories, David will come to discover “some things that he thought were truths in his life … maybe weren’t so true.” Hmm.

The ABC drama opens its new season this Sunday at 8/7c; Rose will guest-star in Episode 7 flashbacks.
In other Once return news, EW.com reports that Tzi Ma will return as the mysterious Dragon, having most recently played the role in the May finale.

Robin Hood:

Fans asked, Once Upon a Time answered: Sean Maguire is returning to the ABC fairy tale drama in season 6, EW has learned exclusively.

Though Robin Hood met a grim fate at the close of season 5, Maguire will appear in multiple episodes this season. However, the character is not coming back from the dead. The powers that be are keeping how he’s returning — whether it’s via flashback or some other means — under wraps.

“We’re thrilled to have Sean back for this story arc and are excited for the audience to see what we have planned, which in the wake of his character’s heartbreaking demise, is something we hope is unexpected and surprising,” executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis tell EW.

Last season, Hades (Greg Germann) planned to use the Olympian crystal to kill Regina (Lana Parrilla), which he claimed meant no underworld and no afterlife for the person afflicted. However, in the season 6 premiere, Henry (Jared Gilmore) gave Regina hope that Hades was lying and that Robin’s soul did move on after his death.

It’s an idea Horowitz and Kitsis first teased at Comic-Con, explaining that some of the characters would question whether Hades was telling the truth, but that didn’t mean they were bringing Robin Hood back to life. Pressed further at a recent press screening about whether the show would “pull a Hook” — referring to the group going to the Underworld to resurrect Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) — Kitsis said, “ ‘I don’t see that happening,’ would be the respectful answer to our fans.”

“We see those tweets every day — all 3,000 of them, every two seconds,” Kitsis said of the fan fervor over Robin Hood’s death. “We’ve had loss on this show, we’ve had people come back. We’re not going to the Underworld this year, so I can tell you that a lot of this year is about Regina dealing with loss and moving on, because I think Regina has the most unfair luck of anybody, but that’s what makes her Regina.”

“By moving on, we don’t mean falling in love with someone right away,” Horowitz added. “That’s not realistic to us. This was someone she did love, who she did lose. We hope that we deal with that grief and its aftermath in a real way.”

Outside of Once Upon a Time, Maguire will also appear on NBC’s new fall drama Timeless as James Bond author Ian Fleming. Get the details here.

August

EXCLUSIVE! 'Once Upon a Time' Scoop: Eion Bailey Will Return as Pinocchio to 'Save the Day'

We've got to tell you the truth, Oncers -- Pinocchio is coming back to Storybrooke!

Eion Bailey is set to reprise his role as fan favorite August in Once Upon a Time's sixth season, ET exclusively reveals.

Once co-creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis promise that August's homecoming will be especially helpful to his BFF, Emma, who is currently battling with mental visions of her own demise.

"As a resident of Storybrooke and a close friend of Emma's, every now and then you need to call on Pinocchio to save the day," the showrunners shared with ET.

Bailey -- who will be back for at least one episode -- is set to make his fairytale return in the first half of season six.

The last time viewers saw our favorite puppet-turned-real-boy (Hmm… or should we say attractive man?), it was on Once's season four finale, "Operation Mongoose Part 1," when he helped direct the heroes to find the Apprentice and potentially stop Isaac, the author at the time.

And if we're getting really technical here, the last time August was mentioned was in the season five finale, "An Untold Story," when our heroes were searching for a way to restore magic. The Dragon encouraged Emma to use what August taught her: that one has to believe in magic in order for it to be seen.

King George

Alan Dale is slated to reprise his role as King George in an upcoming episode of Once Upon a Time, EW has learned exclusively.

The Lost alum first appeared in season 1, where viewers learned that King George’s wife was unable to bear children, so he enlisted Rumple (Robert Carlyle) to acquire an heir — James (Josh Dallas) therefore grew up the prince, while his twin brother David (also Josh Dallas) was raised the pauper. But when James died, David took his place and eventually rebelled against his pseudo-father when he fell in love with Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin).

“King George returns to cause trouble for Snow and Charming in an episode later this season that shines a new light on all of their pasts and has a profound impact on their futures,” executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz tell EW.

To note: King George is not to be confused with Charming’s real father, who died in a mysterious cart accident that David is investigating this season. Get scoop on that here.

Dale joins several other familiar faces who have popped back up in season 6, including David Anders, Jessy Schram, and the soon-to-return Sean Maguire. More scoop here!

Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Here’s a fun bit of casting quietly nestled at the bottom of ABC’s press release for the next episode of Once Upon a Time: genre-TV fave Jaime Murray will be guest-starring.

In the ninth episode of Season 6, titled “Changelings” (and looking very ominous for Rumple and Belle), the Brit beauty will be playing the Black Fairy, TVLine has confirmed. (Her first name was spelled “Jamie” in an early version of the release, conjuring a bit of confusion.)
Murray most recently played the milky-complexioned alien Stahma Tarr on Syfy’s Defiance. Her other previous TV cre
